How to tune your guitar
The six strings of the guitar in Standard Tuning are as follows:
- 6th string, E
- 5th string, A (just over an octave below middle C)
- 4th string, D (the one next to the 1st string, about an octave below middle C)
- 3rd string, G (3 whole steps, a “forth,” below middle C)
- 2nd string, B (one half step below middle C)
- 1st string, E (2 whole steps above middle C)
Method:
- Click the tuner button labeled “E.” Tune the 6th string, low E, first. Adjust the tuning peg to the correct tension, until it sounds exactly the same as the tuning tone.
- Click the tuner button labeled “A.” Press the 5th fret of the 6th string to get the pitch of the 5th string. These two tones should match. Adjust the 5th string tuning peg until the string matches the tuning tone.
- Click the tuner button labeled “D.” Press the 5th fret for the 5th string to get the pitch for the 4th string. These two tones should match. Adjust the 4th string tuning peg until the string matches the tuning tone.
- Click the tuner button labeled “G.” Press the 5th fret of the 4th string to get the pitch for the 3rd string. These two tones should match. Adjust the 3rd string tuning peg until the string matches the tuning tone.
- Click the tuner button labeled “B.” Press the 4th fret of the 3rd string to get the pitch for the 2nd string. These two tones should match. Adjust the 2nd string tuning peg until the string matches the tuning tone.
- Click the tuner button labeled “E.” Press the 5th fret of the 2nd string to get the pitch for the 1st string. These two tones should match. Adjust the 1st string tuning peg until the string matches the tuning tone.
