5 string banjo with G-standard tuning

How to tune your banjo

The strings of the banjo (from left to right, Standard Tuning):

  • 5th string (the one attached to the peg half-way up the neck) G
  • 4th string, D (the one next to the 1st string, about an octave below middle C)
  • 3rd string, G (3 whole steps, a “forth,” below middle C)
  • 2nd string, B (one half step below middle C)
  • 1st string, D (one whole step above middle C)

Method

  1. Click the 2nd tuner button from the left, labeled “D”. This tuning tone corresponds to the 4nd string from the right, and is the lowest pitch on your banjo. If the tuning tone is too loud, you can adjust the volume with the slider (the webpage will remember the volume next time you visit).
  2. Adjust the tuning peg that corresponds to the 4th string from the right to the correct tension, until it sounds exactly the same as the tuning tone.
  3. Press the 4th string at the 5th fret. This tone should match the 3rd tuning button, “G” and the 3rd string on your banjo. Adjust the corresponding peg until the 3rd string matches both of these methods for producing a tuning tone.
  4. Press the 3rd string at the 4th fret. This tone should match the 4th tuning button, “B” and the 2nd string on your banjo. Adjust the peg until the 2nd string matches both these tuning tones.
  5. Press the 2nd string at the 3rd fret. This tone should match the 5th tuning button, “D” and the 1st string on your banjo. Adjust the peg until the 1st string matches both these tuning tones.
  6. Last we’ll tune the 5th string, or the string with the peg half-way up the neck. Press the 1st string at the 5th fret. This tone should match the 1st tuning button, “G”, and the 5th string on your banjo. Adjust the peg that is half-way up the neck until the 5th string matches both these tuning tones.
